Non Toxic Play - Homemade Play Dough

Why buy it ?   When you can make it ?

And by making it... you know exactly what goes into it... and therefore, what goes into your child's mouth...

  • 2 cups plain flour
  • 1/2 cup table salt
  • 2 tablespoons cream of tartar
  • 2 tablespoons oil ( I used Rice Bran, but any vegetable oil will do )
  • 1 1/2 cups boiling water
  • food colouring

Mix the dry ingredients together in a large mixing bowl :  flour, table salt and cream of tartar.

Add the food colouring TO the boiling water then add to the dry ingredients.

Don't panic, it looks like a disaster to start with ;)

Keep string until it becomes a sticky dough.

Once again, don't panic, it goes lumpy to start with.

Allow it to cool down, then knead it vigorously until you get a smooth consistency.

This may take a couple of few minutes.

Add more flour if mixture remains sticky ( I added flour twice )

Once you have the mixture smooth, add a couple more drops oil to the dough and knead, to smooth it out nicely.

And just when you think.... 'this is not working"...... it all comes together !

And there you have it... smooth, perfect, homemade, non-toxic, play dough !

Enjoy x

Want more than one colour ?  After you have mixed the dry ingredients together, split your dry ingredients into 2 bowls, before adding the oil and then split the oil and split the amount of boiling water and use 2 different colours of food colouring. Add the one colour to the one lot of boiling water and then add to the four mixture and do the same with the second colour.
