Wine & BBQ Tour, Waiheke Island, New Zealand
Posted on 20 April 2017
The ultimate Waiheke Island experience that has all of the following :
- A personal touch
- A small and intimate group
- Kids are allowed
- A true Kiwiana experience
- BBQ Lunch is included in the price
- Does not cost a fortune
With family recently visiting us from South Africa, we were looking for a really special day for them. Being Auckland based, we decided Waiheke Island was the perfect destination for that experience. Having a 2.5 year old boy ourselves and family from South Africa with a 4 year old girl, finding a company in Waiheke that would accommodate us with children was challenging.
I am sure most travellers to New Zealand with children would be in a similar situation, no baby sitters and still wanting to experience the best attractions New Zealand has to offer.
I was very excited to come across the company The Waiheke BBQ Tour .
Owned and operated by Justin, your host and guide whilst on the tour.
HOW WE GOT THERE :
Only a 40 minute ferry ride from downtown Auckland to Waiheke Island. You have the choice of sitting on the top deck if the weather allows, alternatively there are comfortable seats and tables inside.
On arrival we were met by Justin holding his 'Wine & BBQ Tour' sign.
Our transport for the tour was the 18 seater bus below.
CHILDREN POLICY :
Justin does not cater for under 18's on the tour and his bus does not have seat belts which falls into the Certificate of Fitness requirements. He does however allow children to be part of the tour free of charge during the week and on Sundays provided the tour is not full (other companies do not allow kids regardless of the capacity of the tour).
He does request parents bring along their own capsules/car seats depending on the child's age. This is not compulsory and is left at the discretion of the parents.
THE TOUR :
There is however no guarantee which vineyards you will do the first two wine tastings at, it all depends on the day.
THE BBQ :
Our third and final wine tasting was held at Dellows Distillery and Vineyard.
The BBQ was served outside in a beautiful rustic outdoor patio area.
RETURN BACK TO AUCKLAND :
We caught the 3:15pm Fullers Ferry back to Auckland, arriving back into downtown Auckland at 4pm.
MY THOUGHTS :
From the ferry ride to the wine tastings at stunning vineyards to the BBQ lunch, Waiheke truly is a special outing.
If a baby sitter is not an option (in my case it wasn't) I loved the fact that I could take my child with me. I do suggest taking a baby carrier with you for sleep time.
The BBQ was delicious with a great selection of fresh kiwi style BBQ food.
