Ha'atafu Beach Resort, Tongatapu, Tonga

Looking for an Island Getaway that is family friendly and affordable ?
Look no further than the beautiful Tonga, only a 3 hour flight from New Zealand.
HOW WE GOT THERE :
We flew Virgin Australia, from Auckland into Nuku Alofa, Tonga. This is the airport on the main island of Tongatapu.
Our flight costs came to under $1000 NZD for 2 adults and a 2 year, who now pays 75% of the adult fare.
Virgin Australia fly from Auckland to Tonga on a Tuesday and a Thursday, therefore allowing for a 7 night stay, with 7 full days on the island, perfect.
Flight times were good, departing Auckland around 4pm and arriving in Tonga at 8pm. Departure from Tonga was 9pm, giving you the whole day there. Ha'atafu Beach Resort allow you to stay and enjoy the Resort until your transfer to the airport, which is really great. Arrival in Auckland is 11pm (be prepared with dinner 'on the go' for kids, and pyjamas packed in hand luggage to fall asleep during the car ride home, if not before).
If a Tuesday and Thursday don't suit, Air New Zealand have more regular flights in and out of Nuku Alofa, Tonga.
TRANSFER FROM AIRPORT :
Ha'atafu Beach Resort can pick you up and drop you off at the airport by one of their friendly staff. This is charged extra, we paid $80 NZD for a Return Airport Transfer.
I do recommend this, as the airport is small and crazy busy with locals, it can be a bit much looking for a taxi with kids in tow. The transfer from airport to Ha'atafu Beach Resort is almost an hours drive. The shuttle bus used by Ha'atafu Beach Resort is very comfortable and has air-conditioning.
THE RESORT :
A small, family operated resort that has been specialising in surfing holidays in Tonga since 1979. They offer limited occupancy and cater exclusively for resort guests, which ensures a quiet, peaceful and relaxed atmosphere around the resort. It also helps to keep the surfing friendly.
Location is absolute beachfront with Tongatapu's premier recreational swimming and snorkelling beach right on the doorstep. Also very safe all-tides swimming and ideal for children.
Beautiful Fales nestled in a well manicured tropical garden.
THE BEACH :
No explanation needed :)
Except to say, that it is Tongatapu's premier recreational swimming and snorkelling beach with safe all-tides swimming and ideal for children.
Whether you are a surfer, a fisherman, solo traveller, couple, or family with kids...
There are activities to suit everyones needs.
Surfing, Tuna Fishing, Sea-Kayaking, Snorkelling Gear, Table Tennis, Board Games, DVD Library, Excursions and Car Rental Booking Services and Free Shuttle into town.
There are two resort based boats, available for a range of exciting oceansport activities which include both offshore bluewater fishing and inshore spincasting fishing trips as well as snorkelling tours and surfing trips to nearby reefs.
Oh, and did I mention beers on the beach at sunset !
FOOD AND DRINK :
Accommodation rates include a full breakfast in the morning consisting of fruit, cereals, pancakes and eggs, and then a buffet / family style dinner in the evening.
The food is fresh and really really good. Every evening the buffet style dinner is beautifully prepared in wooden bowls and included fresh tuna, fresh salads, meat and so much more. Kids meals are prepared and served earlier in the evening and there are two high chairs available.
Lunch is available at your own expense and is made fresh on site. Options available where fresh salads, fresh baguettes and smoothies.
The resort does not have a liquor license, therefore alcohol is BYO. This makes for a much cheaper option as you can buy your alcohol duty free in Tonga on arrival and they will keep beers cold in the fridge for you at the resort and spirits can be kept in your room.
You actually do not need to keep cash on hand at the resort, as you run a tab for your drinks and lunches for duration of your stay.
WHAT WE LOVED :
We loved the very personal touch by Moana and her family that own and run the resort, and that their own children are running around and enjoying the beautiful space that they so luckily call home.
We loved the communal eating and interaction with like minded people, it made us feel like we were young, free spirited travellers again.
We loved how happy our son was, and how he still talks about the coconuts and palm trees and his friend Nelson he met in Tonga (he was only 2 at the time we where there).
WHAT WAS A NEGATIVE :
The only negative for me was the mosquitos, they where pretty aggressive mosquitos. The mosquitos were about both day time and night time therefore mosquito repellent is a MUST. However with saying this, my son got maybe 4 bites the entire time we were there and husband 2 and myself a few more as I was not as diligent with the repellent.
Mosquito coils are provided by the resort.
